On this week’s 4Legs Radio Show, our Founder Karen Salmon shared some brilliant and very relatable reminders about keeping Christmas celebrations fun, inclusive, and professional.
Here’s what she covered:
1. Work still starts at 9am
No matter how lively the night before gets, everyone is expected to be bright, polite and on time the next morning. Festive spirits don’t override workplace standards!
2. Include remote staff
Even if it’s just a festive e-card, a Teams wave, or a small gesture, don’t forget colleagues who can’t attend in person. Christmas is about connection, not geography.
3. Choose venues and activities that bring people together
Karen mentioned her own team’s plans at the Corn Exchange drinks, nibbles, a murder mystery night, Secret Santa, and a trip to a local hostelry. The point is: thoughtful, local and community-minded choices can make celebrations memorable.
4. Don’t ignore bad behaviour
Christmas parties don’t suspend HR rules. What happens at the Christmas do can still end up in a tribunal. A gentle reminder to enjoy yourself but stay respectful.
5. Don’t talk HR over wine
A promotion, pay rise or grievance raised after a mulled wine does not count. Save serious conversations for working hours.
6. Keep Secret Santa sensible
A good laugh is fine but avoid anything inappropriate, personal or embarrassing. If in doubt, leave it out.
Karen’s message was clear:
Have fun, stay inclusive, remember your responsibilities, and make Christmas celebrations a positive moment for everyone.
